NAACP Interim President & CEO, Derrick Johnson, will discuss “Beyond Charlottesville: The Policies Undergirding Trump’s White Supremacist Agenda,” at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
In the wake of the tragic and divisive events in Charlottesville, Virginia, where White Supremacists, Neo-Nazis, Klansmen, and the far-right protested the taking down of a Confederate statue, the NAACP’s interim President will discuss the pressing policy issues that represent the sinister underpinnings of President Trump’s policy objectives. The NAACP believes these policies if left unchecked, could do irreparable damage to civil rights and our democracy.
“The President’s failure to forcefully stand against racism and white supremacy represents the nadir of modern American politics,” said NAACP Interim President & CEO Derrick Johnson. “Yet even more frightening are the ways in which his administration has embraced policies designed to reinforce the privileges associated with white supremacy through imposing racist immigration policies; strategically eliminating and weakening civil rights enforcement and the protections against police brutality, all the while supporting partisan-led strategies to suppress the votes of communities of color,” added Johnson.
